Explore step-by-step dental autopsies including physical examination, photography, radiography and the forensic evidence management needs of varying postmortem states including skeletonized, fragmented, decomposed and burned. Missing person investigation methods will be overviewed.

Th6038 - Beyond the Tag & Bag: The Civil & Patient-based Applications of Forensic Dental Consulting

Litigation involving dental professionals requires the guidance of specialized consultants. These consultants should be trained and experienced in practice. In addition, they should be well versed in the development, administration and enforcement of state rules and statutes governing the dental profession. We will identify risks to avoid, in order to reduce legal exposure. The participant will gain valuable insights, which will protect the ethical provider from the nuisances of frivolous litigation and improve the likelihood for a favorable outcome if a suit is filed.

This program examines the deadly synergistic exacerbation between cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the leading cause of death and disability for men and women in North America, and the contributing role oral disease plays in patients with CVD. The conditions of metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and their devastating cardiovascular effects that lead to the tragic outcomes of heart attack and stroke will be discussed.

The criminal acts of human smuggling, exploitations of labor, and sex trafficking often have hidden signs. We dental professionals can be instrumental in recognizing these signs and providing help. Learn the mechanisms and appearances of different injuries with a focus on the common modalities of injuries. Be able to recognize and differentiate among accidental, incidental and intentional injuries. Obtain guidance and resources on mandatory reporting and increase your awareness of these criminal acts.
