According to the Centers for Disease Control, 114 people die from opioid overdose every day in the United States, which is far more than the number of people who die each day in automobile accidents. Ever wondered why so many people are dying from these opioids despite efforts to curb their use? Where do they come from? This lecture will alert attendees to the impact of this crisis on the dental community.

Drs. Hal Crossley and Mitchell Gardiner will present an engaging program on the newest changing standards of care that challenge dentists. It is imperative that dentists stay up to date on the changes that affect clinical dentistry daily. This course will cover a wide array of topics including areas, such as: medical history/medical clearance, oral cancer screening and documentation/follow-up, opioids and pain management, informed consent for procedures and drugs, prophylactic antibiotic protocols and antibiotic usage.

Thirty two states have legalized marijuana for medical use. Nine states have legalized marijuana for recreational purposes. Inevitably, some of these marijuana users will be treated by the dentist or hygienist. Does it have any medicinal use? Is marijuana addicting? What is the effect of marijuana on the cardiovascular, respiratory, or immune systems? Am I allowed to use marijuana for medicinal purposes? This three-hour presentation will discuss the concerns about marijuana use/abuse, and the bearing on dental treatment.

What should I be asking my patients to avoid drug interactions with street drugs? What are some of the oral manifestations of street drug abuse? What are the characteristics of and how do I manage the “doctor shopper”? The dental team is in a unique position providing dental care to a patient population that may be regular users or experimenting with mood-altering drugs. This brief presentation includes the types, signs, and symptoms of commonly abused prescription and illicit drugs.
