A Message from Society President Slade Lail

Well, it’s time once again to begin our journey into a new year with the Hinman Dental Society. There is a lot in store for our future with the addition of some exciting and new events! Before I get into that, I want to thank Dr. Troy Schulman for his leadership and work over the past year.  He and everyone who helped him have once again furthered our Society on a path that exemplifies the excellence that is “Hinman.” Dr. Schulman topped it all off with our Annual Meeting in Hilton Head.  The weather was perfect and all who attended built personal relationships and definitely experienced the comradery that adds to the greatness of our Society.

The Hinman Dental Meeting this past March, led by General Chairman Dr. Sedgie Newsom, was “one for the books.”  Sedgie and his Program Chairs, Drs. Jonathan Dubin and Patrick French, did a spectacular job with five-star speakers lecturing on the theme “The Gateway to Systemic Health: It Starts with a Smile.”  With the covid pandemic in the rearview mirror, this year’s Meeting felt more like the meetings we are all used to.  Progress in moving back to “normal” could be seen with the return of special events and jam-packed exhibit and lecture halls.

I am greatly honored and excited to serve as the President of the Society for the upcoming year.  The foundation of our Society is based upon continuing education.  With that tradition in mind, one of my goals

for this year is to expand educational opportunities to our members throughout the year.  This year we will be having in person C.E. opportunities at the Hinman office with some of the best and brightest our

profession has to offer. Along with this, lectures from next year’s Hinman will be available online, both before and after the March Meeting.

We will have three spectacular Membership Meetings that have been put together by your Society Membership Meeting Program Chair, Dr. Ben Hawkins and myself.  Dr. Dewitt Wilkinson will start us off on Monday,

September 16 at the Emory Conference Center where he will be speaking about “Dentistry’s Role in Complete Healthcare.”  Our second meeting will be at the Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter on Monday, November 11

with Dr. Mike Pruett.  He will discuss “Managing Misfortunes and Complication in the Dental Practice – Things We All Need to Know.”  Finally, on Thursday, January 23 we will meet at the Georgia Aquarium for our staff

lecture with Mr. Bob Kulhan speaking on motivation for the dental team.

Our Society is made up of nearly 800 hundred volunteer dentists – a fact that sets us apart from all other dental meetings in the nation.  Without the hard work and dedication of our members, none of our accomplishments

would be possible. I would also be remiss not to extend a special thanks to the wonderful Hinman staff led by our Executive Director, Lynn Leidel.  She and her dedicated team enable our Society and our Meeting to consistently

be the envy of all other dental meetings.

Again, our Society and the March Meeting would not be possible without YOU, so please sign up to fulfill your membership requirement of working a minimum of 8 hours at next year’s Hinman Dental Meeting.  Dr. William Rousseau

and his program chairs, Drs. Bob O’Donnell and Andy Ramsey,  have been tirelessly preparing for his meeting “Spring Down South.” Once again there is a spectacular lineup of top-notch speakers and events, and we as a Society

are here to support his meeting.

Next summer, we will celebrate a successful year with our Annual Meeting at the Gaylord Opryland Resort just outside of Nashville, TN.  Drs. Miles and Anthea Mazzawi are sure to dazzle us with an amazing vacation packed

with activities to suit all interests. Whether you’d enjoy a tour of Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage mansion, playing all day at Opryland’s indoor water park, hitting the golf course, or strolling through the resort’s indoor rainforest,

there will plenty to keep you busy!  I look forward to seeing all of you there!
