A Message from Society President Sedgie Newsom

Back In Full Swing!

Fall is here and with it our Hinman year has begun!

What better way to start off our fall than to have had renowned speaker and former Endowed Chair of the Department of Restorative Sciences at DCG, Dr. Gerard Chiche, to visit us for the September Membership Meeting. His lecture on Esthetic Management with All-Ceramic Crowns and Veneers at the Westin Perimeter was fantastic. It is the type of quality continuing education that we, as Hinman members, are privileged to enjoy. We had a great turnout and thanks to all of you for making this first meeting of the year such a success!

Be sure to circle Monday evening, November 11th, on your calendar for our next Society meeting, where Dr. Susan Muller will be presenting “Red, White and Ulcerative Lesions of the Oral Cavity. What Are They? How to Treat?” You definitely don’t want  to miss this lecture. November 11th is also Veteran’s Day, and I’ll ask that all Hinman members who’ve served as veterans of our military be recognized for their service.

As most of you know, these Society meetings and our annual summer meetings would not be possible without the generosity of the Board of Trustees. Their contributions allow us to provide the high quality continuing education and the wonderful dinners that we get to enjoy. When you see Dr. Max Ferguson and the other Trustees, please
thank them.

In September, the 2020, 2021 and 2022 program teams were busy scouting at the ADA meeting in San Francisco. I was privileged to spend time with our General Chair, Dr. Bob O’Donnell, at the meeting renewing old friendships and hearing some fabulous speakers, many of whom have been invited to our March 2020 meeting, “Come Home to Hinman.” Bob and his team, Drs. Jane Puskas and William Rousseau, are putting the final touches on their meeting, and judging by the quality of speakers invited, this promises to be the best Hinman ever! As always, when I get to travel with the Hinman team, I’m constantly reminded by other scouts and speakers that our March meeting is THE meeting to attend. As members of Hinman, we’re honored to have such a rich tradition of service and quality education.

In late October, I have the honor to represent the Hinman Dental Society at the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry Hinman Dental Symposium. This year will be the 25th year of Hinman’s sponsorship of the Symposium. Students from all around the country are invited to make presentations. I look forward to the opportunity of spreading the “Good Word” about Hinman, our March meeting with fantastic continuing education and the great generosity of our Society to the attendees and faculty there.

Don’t forget that a part of our Hinman membership requirement is to serve for a minimum of eight hours on a committee at the March meeting. That service will entitle you to an invitation to the General Chair and President’s Reception during the meeting and one night’s hotel stay during our annual meeting next May at Grove Park Inn
in Asheville, NC. If you haven’t signed up for a committee yet, please contact the Hinman staff and get signed up.

There really isn’t a better deal for continuing education than being a member of the Hinman Dental Society. You can earn up to 18 + hours of CE at our March meeting and nine additional hours at our three Society Meetings. Fulfill your duties and get quality CE!

Finally, I want to congratulate Dr. Roy McDonald who was recently honored as Northern District Dentist of the Year. What a great honor and so well deserved! Way to go Roy!

I hope each of you has a wonderful Thanksgiving and a happy holiday season!

- Sedgie
