The opioid epidemic in America has become a critical focus of attention for both state and federal government agencies as well as for health care professionals. It is imperative that as health care providers the dental profession has a complete understanding of the seriousness of this crisis to the well-being of their patients and to themselves as prescribers of these controlled substances. This 3 hour highly interactive program will be presented by Dr. Robert Anderton, Dr. Mitchell Gardiner, Ms. Jo Jagor,JD and Mr. Ryan Donihue,JD. Part I of the program will simulate a civil dental malpractice trial involving alleged violations of the standard of care of a general dentist comprising professional negligence. The trial will be centered around the opioid overdose and death of a patient after dental surgery. It will incorporate the education, experience and training of the defendant dentist and any experts who testify for and against him; the mandatory rules and regulations of the Dental Practice Act; professional dental standards in the state and nationally.
Dental aspects of the trial will be centered on understanding drug addiction, taking a complete and honest medical history, proper pain management, good communication skills, proper documentation and treatment planning for longer opioid use and responsible monitoring of the federal drug program. Part II of the program concerns the follow up investigation by an administrative agency: eg.,the Georgia Dental Board and alleged violation of the Dental Practice Act, allegations of negligence and the alleged failure to timely register for the federal drug monitoring program.
