“Bad to the Bone!” : Osteoporosis and its Treatment and the Link to Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

About 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis. Studies suggest  approximately 1 in 2 women and up to 1 in 4 men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Unfortunately, misinformation exists about the current treatment guidelines for this insidious disease. This program will provide participants with an overview of osteoporosis and the various agents available for its prevention and treatment. Using case scenarios, special emphasis will be given to dental patients taking bisphosphonates and other anti-resorptive medications. Attention will also be directed toward developing patient management strategies essential for successful treatment planning and the management of these patients in everyday clinical situations.
