Dental providers are in a unique position to examine exposed areas of the head and neck during dental treatment. This course is designed to enhance the dental professional’s knowledge of skin anatomy and highlight some of the more common skin conditions involving the head and neck region. The course will focus on identifying lesions such as pigmented growths including freckles, moles and age spots as well as the effect of sun exposure to face and lips. The ABCDE’s of melanoma will be discussed to help distinguish a low risk mole from a potentially malignant melanoma. Treatment options will be explored including which suspicious lesions need referral to a specialist.
