“Dead Bones Walking”: An Overview of Osteoporosis and Osteonecrosis of the Jaw, Pharmacologic Management, Dental Considerations and Patient Care Planning Strategies

About 54 million Americans have low bone mass and are at increased risk for osteoporosis. Studies suggest that 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men will break a bone due to osteoporosis. This program will provide an overview of this disease, its treatment and impact on dentistry, especially managing patients receiving anti-resorptive drugs. The session will discuss osteoporosis and the agents used its treatment; describe the pathophysiology of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw; and describe current treatment for patients receiving anti-resorptive drugs.
