FR251 - Red, White, and Ulcerative Lesions of the Oral Cavity. What Are They? How to Treat?

This course is designed to guide the attendee through the differential diagnosis, treatment, and management of commonly encountered oral soft tissue growths and ulcers and identify when to biopsy. We will address the differential diagnoses of white lesions including leukoplakia and lichen planus and red lesions including erythroplakia and geographic tongue. Emphasis on the clinical presentation of oral dysplasia or early cancer will be illustrated. Biopsy techniques including direct immunofluorescence will be reviewed. Differentiating oral ulcers based on clinical presentation, duration and location will be discussed, specifically, oral herpes and aphthous ulcers. We’ll review diagnosis and treatment options for burning mouth/tongue syndrome and other vesiculo-erosive conditions.

Fasten your seatbelts! This lecture will be heavy on pictures illustrating a variety of conditions encountered frequently in the dental office. Growths common in all ages, from children to the elderly will be reviewed as well as the signs and symptoms of oropharyngeal carcinoma and the role HPV plays. Attendees will learn to develop a differential diagnosis for common oral growths through color, shape and size. They will also learn which lesions are normal variations and when to refer for biopsy and be familiar with the terminology of leukoplakia and erythroplakia and how to distinguish these entities. They will also develop an organized approach to oral examinations and recognize the most common areas for oral cancer development.

SA366 - Looking Beyond the Oral Cavity: Practical Dermatology for Dental Providers

Dental providers are in a unique position to examine exposed areas of the head and neck during dental treatment. This course is designed to enhance the dental professional’s knowledge of skin anatomy and highlight some of the more common skin conditions involving the head and neck region. The course will focus on identifying lesions such as pigmented growths including freckles, moles and age spots as well as the effect of sun exposure to face and lips. The ABCDE’s of melanoma will be discussed to help distinguish a low risk mole from a potentially malignant melanoma. Treatment options will be explored including which suspicious lesions need referral to a specialist.
