The oral, head & neck cancer screening examination technique will be reviewed in detail with helpful recognition and diagnostic strategies. Common oral lesions and head/neck pathology observed in general and specialty dental practice will be presented. Learning Objectives: 1. Review detailed oral, head & neck cancer screening examination techniques & protocol. 2. More effectively perform oral cancer screening and lesion assessment. 3. Increase exposure to commonly observed oral lesions/pathology encountered in general and specialty dental practice. 4. Improve recognition of oral lesions/manifestations of systemic diseases encountered in clinical dental practice. 5. Review simplified oral lesion differential diagnosis. 6. Make better clinical/practice decisions regarding adjunctive/biopsy techniques and specialty referrals.

Th107 - Oral Lesion Biopsy and Adjunctive Device Techniques Workshop

Using pig mandibles, attendees of this course will be introduced to and will practice punch and conventional scalpel blade incisions, specimen harvest, and biopsy site closure. The course will cover indications for biopsy, case selection, differential diagnosis, informed consent, surgical biopsy site planning, armamentarium, suturing, and post-operative management.  Pathology laboratory selection/interaction, documentation, billing, biopsy report interpretation, patient discussion, and management and referral strategies will also be reviewed as well as lesion assessment adjunctive devices/tests.

All oral health providers are confronted daily with oral signs and symptoms that may relate directly to underlying systemic diseases. Patients with systemic diseases require pre-operative medical and dental risk assessment, as well as occasional medical consultation, coordination of care and referrals. Providers will be encouraged to improve clinical skills related to detecting systemic diseases via oral examination and thorough medical history taking. Relevant medical conditions will be presented highlighting oral manifestations, medical testing, conventional medical management and interprofessional medical-dental practice. You will be inspired to elevate your medical diagnostic, interpretation, and physician consultation/referral skills to help your patients overall health and pursuit of wellness.
