This session defines the state-of-the-art relative to contemporary periodontal therapy. Periodontal treatment goals should be long term through appropriate state-of-the-art and state-of-the-science care, including the role of definitive pocket reduction for long-term success. Problems to be discussed include periodontal infection and inflammation, systemic implications and plaque control relative to caries and periodontal disease. Findings from the recently published World Workshop in Periodontics will be reviewed.

Current literature suggests an incidence exceeding 50 percent for peri-mucositis and 33 percent for peri-implantitis. This session addresses the prevention and, if present, subsequent management of surgical, prosthetic and maintenance issues relating to peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis. We will discuss the need for pro-active surgical, prosthetic, and long-term approaches to peri-implant disease for long-term implant success. The roles of occlusion, form and function and cleansability will be stressed..

Innovative dental procedures – combining regenerative periodontal therapy as part of orthodontic treatment, enable the dentist to minimize potential iatrogenic risk factors associated with rehabilitative dental therapy. Background, concepts and limitations of Pre-Orthodontic Periodontal Augmentation (POPA), as well as long-term complications associated with orthodontic treatment will be addressed. Representative clinical cases will be presented. This program is oriented to all members of the dental community and will also address latest findings on POPA in the adolescent dentition.
