Practitioners must deal with an expanding array of patients with medical issues
as the population ages. When practitioners think they understand procedure,
the rules are changed. BRONJ (bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the
jaw) is now MRONJ (medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw). Total joint
replacement patients no longer need premedication. Patients on Coumadin and
other blood thinners do not always need to stop medications prior to dental
treatment. Examine these issues and begin to understand the science behind the
current management protocols.
