Traditional dental education has focused on the role of bacterial plaque in the
development and treatment of periodontal disease. Recently we have become
aware of the damaging effects of inflammation which is influenced by many
factors. Through an understanding of biofilms and individual susceptibility, we
can better arm ourselves with the information and tools to fight oral disease.
A quick review of recent literature along with medical case presentations will
help highlight the dentist’s role in overall health care. By helping patients explore
the etiology of their diseases, we empower them to take ownership of and
responsibility for their oral health.
